Class Notes
The research colloquium provides a forum in which graduate students, faculty, and invited lecturers present research in progress. The course will display writing is a core research competence, and this seminar studies both the genres of academic writing and a variety of approaches to the practicalities of how to write. Here are the genres on which this seminar focuses: article, dissertation prospectus, fellowship application, dissertation or book chapter, book proposal, and job market dossier. We study these genres themselves, and we also share work in progress. Participating in a community of active readers and fellow writers is an important part of writing, and this seminar encourages its members to develop their own independent writing groups. Moreover, because many of these writing genres are common to all researchers regardless of stage, the seminar is open to multiple constituencies: graduate students both before and after the ABD milestone, undergraduates enrolled in the BPhil, faculty at all levels, and alums of the graduate program. Those who can take the seminar for credit are asked to do so (so that the course will run), but those who cannot take it for credit are also warmly invited into this writing community. Doctoral students who are beyond their term of funding are invited to join, and given the affordances of Zoom the same goes for folks who are not physically present in Pittsburgh. If you would like to share some work in progress but will not be formally enrolled in the course, do be in touch (dlm91@pitt.edu), and lets try to set something up.
